EARTHJUSTICE: TITLE IV

An industrial hog facility in North Carolina. Hog feces and urine are flushed into open, unlined pits and then sprayed onto nearby fields. The practice leads to waste contaminating nearby waters, and drifting as "mist" onto neighboring properties. Photo from Earthjustice.org, courtesy of Friends of Family Farmers.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is one of the few enforceable civil rights laws that cover environmental actions. Title VI is a powerful legal tool to hold agencies accountable for the downstream impacts of their decisions on communities of color that are already overburdened by environmental pollution. Learn how Earthjustice is using Title IV to advocate for communities in eastern North Carolina.
